It's Always Sunny @ Minney's

Many of you may not know that we rent out items from the store for parties, photoshoots, birthdays etc... but every once in a while Hollywood shows up for something kind of cool. A few months ago I worked with the set designers from the TV show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." They needed to build a run-down houseboat for one of their episodes and realized they had struck gold when they walked into the store.

They asked if I wanted to come up to the set... either to the houseboat itself for exterior shots or to the Fox Studios lot for where our items were being used. I've been on boats... I wanted to see the set. Here's a couple pictures of our gear and the cast of the show.

The Blog is Back

My sincerest apologies to those of you that have endured three long weeks with no updates from the store. I just got back from Boston for my college graduation, and needless to say blogging was lower on the list than drinking, partying, and a few other "ing's."

Things are heating up at the store as the El Niño storms seem to have let up and we've had some gorgeous days with many more to come. For those of you that don't know, we're less than a month away from our annual swap meet, and this year's promises to be as big as ever. There are still spots available if you're looking to sell.

Lastly Ernie and I got to check out the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA as well as the Boston Yacht Club... pretty neat.

We Buy Used Boat Gear!

When people first walk into Minney's their jaw usually drops and once they get that under control they ask us where we find all of this stuff. Well as you can see from the picture this stuff finds us. We pay cash for boat gear, and just this morning within 1 hour four different people came in with loads of gear. So if you've got things to sell, we're the people to sell to.

37th Annual Newport Boat Show

This weekend, April 15-18 is the annual Newport Beach boat show, and judging by the number of docks they've been putting together all week it promises to be bigger than ever. Head down and check it out, then stop by the store and our prices will seem even more reasonable. Santana conditions today, maybe they'll fend off the storm that's headed in this weekend and we can all go sailing.

Schooner Cup 2010

I was fortunate enough to get a day off work this weekend to head down to San Diego to sail aboard Rose of Sharon in the 22nd Schooner Cup. There's really no more beautiful sight than watching 9 schooners on a beam reach around Point Loma, and it's even more beautiful when you're in front of the pack looking back at all of them. The fantastic race was followed up by a great party at Silver Gate Yacht Club with stiff drinks and good food... and the more we drank, the more we supported the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. There really is nothing like the feeling of giving back.

Your Newport to Ensenada Headquarters

There are only 22 days left until the start of the 63rd annual Newport to Ensenada race, and Minney's has everything you need to get you down there in time for beer and margaritas and maybe a leap into the pool from the roof of the Bahia... depending on the wind of course.

We've got your charts, flags, life jackets, etc... along with plenty of "light wind" gear like boom vangs, preventers, drifters, and lightweight sheets.

Buy Used Outboards- Don't Get the Shaft

Just in time for summer, we've got some of our best outboards we've ever had. Two strokes and four strokes, these motors are sure to keep you putting around Southern California at a fraction of the cost you'd pay for a new one. The selection changes every week so be sure to call ahead to see what we have in stock. The motors pictured are some of our more "vintage" models, while the real gems are kept inside the store. If you're looking to sell your outboard we're interested in running outboards 15 horsepower or less.

Here at Minney's we've always liked to think of our store as a destination for boaters all over the world, and we've worked hard not to let that go to our heads. Yesterday that was a bit tough though when two dozen of the most pleasant members of Southwestern Yacht Club showed up at our front door in a chartered bus for a day of shopping at Minney's.

We try our best to keep boating affordable, and an event like this lets us know we're still doing a good job. Thank you to all of you that made the trip up yesterday, and a big thanks to the organizers who made this possible at Southwestern Yacht Club. We hope to see you all soon!

Varnishing Weather

The rain has let up finally and the sun is out which means its time to break out the brush and tack cloth and get your boats in Opening Day shape. We've recently lowered our prices on varnish and thinner, and we've got everything else you need to get your topsides ready for summer.

PS: We sell our sandpaper at cost.

Spring Is Coming

Despite the gusty winds the past few days it's starting to warm up around here, and almost time to head over to Catalina. Don't waste your money on the water taxi this year, come into Minney's and pick up a good inflatable or rowing dinghy on the cheap. Avons, Achilles, Zodiacs and more just waiting for a good home.
