2013 NEWPORT BEACH TO ENSENADA, MEXICO INTERNATIONAL YACHT RACE. STARTED 11:00 PM APRIL 26TH

Highlights of the start of the Newport Beach to Ensenada, Mexico International yacht race.  It was a beautiful day with moderate winds out of the south west.  It appeared that all classes had a clean start and were soon close reaching on a course of about 140 degrees directly for Los Coronados islands which like directly on the rhumb line to Ensenada.  In no time the maxis were smoking along at tens and 12's while she smaller PHRF fleets were knocking off sixes and sevens.  It was reported that about 200 boats cleared the starting line.  Unrest in Mexico and a new shorter race called the "Border Dash" which is from Newport Beach, around the South Coronado island with a finish in San Diego has picked up almost half the fleet of 500 or more boats that formerly went to Ensenada.  It was a beautiful sight as we watched the fleet disappear over our  S.E. horizon.  Having made close to forty of these races through the years, I felt I was totally copping out by heading back in the Newport breakwater and not part of the excitement as the fleet works further offshore, the afternoon westerlies set in and  spinnakers start to blossom!!! Music is an late 1800's Italian sailor's ballad played by Ernie Minney.

ONE MAN'S DREAM !!!

Owner of this boat asked me to post a few pictures and help him sell it.  It's an un-finished Maritius 42 yawl that is in a boat yard in Costa Mesa California.  Interior wood work is exceptional.  Asking price is $35,000.00.  Please contact the owner (he's handling the sale for the estate of his father) direct for more information.  Jeff Myers at 949-423-7023 for more information.  Aluminum for the spars is included and a there is a small shed full of more parts and equipment the boat.

Big Teak Swim Step !!

This beautiful Wheeler power boat has been cut up in Ensenada.  I have the Burma teak swim step at my store.  It's just under 13 feet long, about 24" wide and about 12" of arc and is about 2" thick.  It is  in excellent condition.  No brackets.  Price $1000.00. The big Ideal windlass is still available in Ensenada.  I'm guessing the new cost (google Ideal?) would be over $3000.00?  Owner of the winch wants $500.00.  We're pretty sure it's 32volt.  Weighs about 200 pounds.  Contact the store for more info.  You have to pick it up in Ensenada.  Newport Beach BOAT SHOW starts today and runs through the weekend.  Drop by the store if you are in town?

"Hove to" in Bahia de Los Angeles!!!

That's a 60 knot dust storm heading for the house at sunset yesterday.  Lots of damage in the town, power out, lots of mobile homes damaged.  A forty footer that had just been trucked into town was rolled over and totally demolished.  Lots of roofs and palapas damaged.  Been coming here for 25 years, that's the most wind I've seen down here?  Lower photo, roof almost done, little skylight in place and roofing paper goes on tomorrow.  Boy was it fun trying to move 4X8 sheets plywood in 20 to 30 knots of wind.  I capsized twice.

Down Mexico way.......

March was my month to measure sails and work around the store.  We put almost 500 sails on our web site and I'm pretty proud of that.  Only one day did I hire a former Doyle sail loft owner to measure small class racing sails.  I looked over his comments and got after him a bit.  Being used to brand new stuff he was grading extremely TOUGH on how he was grading the condition? I didn't change any of his comments but did do all the pricing.  As you know, we have about 100 of these sails presently at an additional 50% discount until I return from Baja and we can put them away.  At the moment I'm hiding out at Bahia de Los Angles, we call it the bay of L.A.  I've had a little "casita" here for the past 25 year and totally enjoy the beauty of the place and the laid back life style pics are the roof I'm building on my little stone generator foom, the last two is what I'm doing right now as the sun is setting.  This is a popular cruising ground for boaters, quite often they anchor in front of my little casa.  All for now, talked to the store today on an Iridium sat phone that came into the store.  Wow, those things are FANTASTIC!!!!! Dave the store manager said the Lewmar 30's are selling fast but we think we will
have enough of them through April.  Yeah, you guys love the free shipping so we'll continue it till the end of April.  I think there are still about 10 of the Minney's hats un-claimed?  All it takes is an e-mail with an address where to ship it and you'll not only be "styling" but the talk of your local dive bar or yacht club........Adios.........Ernesto
